Planning a Themed Wedding

When you dreamed of your wedding as a little girl, was it a grand, traditional experience or did it have a unique, modern twist?

The sky is the limit when planning a theme wedding. The key thing to remember is that even though it is a theme wedding, it should have all of the same basic elements of a traditional wedding. But where to start? Our check list is the first step.

  • Choose Your Theme!A great theme wedding cannot start without a great theme. Start by choosing something meaningful to you. What are your interests or hobbies? Are you more serious, playful, elegant or edgy? Whatever you choose, make sure it fits your personality.
  • Popular themes include beach/nautical and garden themes, romantic or Shakespearean themes and even Western-style or Renaissance themes. Cultural themes are especially popular in recent years. These include African, Hawaiian, Italian or Asian Wedding Theme. Choose Unique Wedding Favors and Invitations!
Invitations are a great place to start introducing your theme. For the Renaissance theme, an invitation with a knight in shining armor
would fit well. A garden theme invitation inset with flowers and
trees would work well for a garden wedding. Do you want a causal
beach wedding? Create fun, tropical style invitations to give
your guests a hint of what is to come.
  • Continue your theme with themed wedding favors. If you and your fiancé love golf, golf ball bottle openers or a golfer's key ring might be perfect for you. You can start your search for the most unique wedding favors and bridal shower favors online.
  • Choose Location and Decorations! Now that you have decided on a theme, picked out invitations and chosen favors, you can think about big items like location and decorations.
Remember, nothing is too out of the ordinary.
  • Host a Camelot-themed wedding inside a romantic castle or an under the sea wedding at the local aquarium. A garden wedding would be perfect in a tranquil wooded setting.
  • When decorating for your Renaissance wedding, you can use flowers, balloons, garlands, streamers, posters and other items to help transform your site into the fairytale you are creating for your guests.
  • Think about popular motifs for your theme. Beach balls indicate a fun beach wedding, while a saddle and bales of hay would be perfect for a Western-themed wedding. Whatever you choose, there are great places where you can either rent or purchase everything from decorations to props and costumes.
  • Choose the Music, Food and Dance! What better way to carry out your theme than through the right choice of music. This is especially true for cultural weddings where African music or an Italian dance can set the mood and make all the difference.
  • Do some research to find the right type of music or take dance classes to learn the proper waltz technique for a royal wedding. Through your research, you may find other great ideas for details to make your themed event a spectacular one.

Wedding Gift Suggestions

If your friends are looking for a few solid wedding gift ideas for you, and you don't have a registry to work off of or need anything in particular, here are some suggestions for gifts:

  • Money – Cash gifts may seem impersonal to some, but for couples that are not registered the gift of cash can be put towards anything they’d like whether it’s a down payment on a vehicle, a house or just fun splurge money for their honeymoon vacation – it’s a gift that let’s them get what they want.
  • Reservations – You may not think this is such a big deal, but covering their expenses for a night in a luxurious honeymoon suite before they continue on to their honeymoon can be a real kick for many newlyweds. They can savor the room service, the Jacuzzi tubs and the opulent privacy that every newlywed couple deserves
  • Gift Certificates – Whether you give them a gift certificate to a wonderful place at their honeymoon destination or to favored restaurants at home; gift certificates are great wedding gift ideas because it allows them to enjoy fine food and a romantic dinner
  • Bottle of Wine or Champagne – This is a good wedding gift idea for the right couple. Give them a bottle of wine or champagne with a note to not be opened until their 1st wedding anniversary.
  • A donation in the couples name.

Spiked Hot Chocolate for Valentine's Day- "YUM-O"

Ahhhhhh, February 14th will be here before you know it. So now the dilemma. What to buy, what to buy for your better half. Well, I found what I think is the perfect thing. It's a gift from the heart, for the tummy ... not too personal, not too non-personal, sweet and is full of sentiment and chocolate : )

Instead of the typical box of chocolates that you just can't stop eating, how about a great Hot Chocolate drink spiked with a shot of Kailua and whipped crème? You can even spice it up with a great movie, a fireplace (if you have one) or whatever else you can think of. Just remember it's all about the presentation; which means, real whip cream, real cups (not Styrofoam) and cook it ... don't microwave it : ) Without further adieu, here is the recipe:

      SPIKED HOT CHOCOLATE
    • 1/2 Cup Milk
    • 1 Cup Heavy Cream
    • 1/4 Cup Whole Coffee Beans
    • 2 Oz. Semisweet Chocolate chopped
    • 2 TB Kahlua
    • 1 Tsp Confectioners' Sugar
    • 1 TB Dark Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans Chopped

    Directions:

    • In a saucepan (of course), over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream and whole bag of coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover and steep beans for 1 hour.
    • Strain liquid and return to saucepan, discard beans.
    • Bring milk and cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate and whisk until mixed.
    • Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua.
    • Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioner's sugar until soft peaks form.
    • Divide hot chocolate between two cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate covered coffee beans.
    • Serves 2

    • Oh and I forgot, what would really seal the deal is if you are wearing our adorable Marilyn Bandeau Apron set.... believe me, you will see the population rise in about 9 months after wearting this adorable outfit : ) And below, some unique cups you could use to serve this delectible drink....

    February 14th Valentine's Day

Saint Valentine's Day or Valentine's Day is a holiday on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine's cards, donating to charity or gifting candy. It is very common to present flowers on Valentine's Day. The holiday is named after two men, both Christian martyrs among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines." Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards.[1] The mid-nineteenth century Valentine's Day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the United States to follow.[2] The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. The association estimates that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines (source)

Three Weddings and a Beach Boy .... Say what ????

GREY skies and spitting rain didn't stop tens of thousands of fans from stepping out yesterday for the first big events of the Sydney Festival 2008.

Huddled under their umbrellas, people were spoilt for entertainment choices with a free concert in The Domain featuring Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys and Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly.

And three couples loved the idea of the festival so much they decided to get married among the crowds.

They started their unconventional wedding ceremony by marching down a red carpet in Macquarie Street.

Holly Ashby, heavily pregnant, and Dan Fish, from Britain, lined up with Imogen Kelly and Gerard Mahony, from Brisbane.

Wearing a long red satin gown with feathers, Ms Kelly jumped out of a giant pink wedding cake while Mr Mahony rode on a motorbike. Then Ms Kelly, a burlesque dancer, stripped down to reveal . . . well almost all.

Gay couple Greg Small and Avan Tiong, from Sydney, celebrated a "commitment ceremony" to the tune of a drag Kylie Minogue megamix.

At The Domain, Steven Gillespie, of Connells Point, said the last time he saw Wilson perform live was in the early '70s at the Sydney Sports Ground, now Aussie Stadium. His partner of four years Kerrie Lentfer said: "He's a romantic. When we first started dating he sang all the Beach Boys songs to me." (source)

50 Romantic Things To Do For Your Sweetie

Here are a list of 50 things you can do to express your love Courtesy of Dumb Little Man (Isn't that the cutest little blog name ... it cracked me up : ) ). His tips are great and actually words to live by. "If things aren't good between you and your partner right now, this might be just the thing to slowly melt the ice between you both. If things are already good, this will strengthen your relationship further. By the way, there is nothing expensive on this list so there is no excuse not to give this a shot."

    • Write "I love you" in the steam on the bathroom mirror after he takes a shower.
    • Offer a back massage with some good smelling lotion.
    • Write a poem. Then use Google Translator to translate a poem into either French or Italian. Then handwrite it out with the translation on the back side. Or better yet, greet your partner at night and read it to them with passion and then hand them the translation.
    • While in public, declare "I love you, Matilda!" (not Matilda, but your partner's name.)
    • Make a CD with a few songs that are meaningful to your relationship.
    • Invite him to take a bath complete with bubbles, champagne, candles, and maybe a little Barry White. (the music, not actually Barry White in your tub.)
    • Surprise her at work and take her out to lunch, maybe take-out food in the park or maybe to a little diner, for a midday romantic interlude.
    • Put together a little gift on his pillow: chocolate and a note that says "Your love is like chocolate: sweet and delicious."
    • If your partner has a work presentation at an off site location, have flowers and a note of support delivered there.
    • Dedicate a song to him on the radio and send him an email telling him when to listen.
    • Cook a special love meal of your partner's favorite foods. Play his favorite music and turn the lights low for a romantic dinner.
    • Give your partner a pedicure and foot rub.
    • Send a text message or email that says "I love you!"
    • Mail a card and inside write down the top 10 things you love about your partner.
    • Give him a picture of you for his wallet that says "I love you."
    • Leave a love note in her car telling her to have a great day.
    • Carve your initials in a tree. (HMMMM -I don't know about this one)
    • When your partner least expects it, give him a great big kiss, even if it's in public!
    • Go see a romantic movie, sit in the back row, hold hands, and cuddle.
    • King for a Day/ Queen for a Day. Declare that you will dedicate a particular day just to your partner to do whatever they want. Maybe start with breakfast in bed.
    • Buy a tree and invite your partner to plant it with you explaining that this tree represents the love between you both that will grow over the years.
    • In the midst of talking about how your days went, the chores that need to be done, etc. interrupt and say "I have something important to tell you. I love you and here's why." Then list 5 things (or more) that you really appreciate about your partner. Finish with a kiss and say, "Ok, so you were talking about the water heater."
    • Write an old fashioned love letter and mail it. Be romantic and lavish. Have some fun with it.
    • Before going to a party together come up with some secret code words you can use during conversation. You can be telling each other "I can't wait to get you alone tonight!" without anyone knowing!
    • Find a hotel that has a jacuzzi and book it for a one night getaway somewhere close but fun.
    • Place an ad in the classifieds declaring your love. Then take the newspaper, wrap it in a bow, and put a little note on it saying what page to look on.
    • Blindfold surprise. Blindfold your partner and drive them to the place where you had your first date, and have that date all over again!
    • Write a love poem for her.
    • Make an early valentine. Cut out some paper in the shape of a heart. Write something sweet on it in red and put it in her purse or his briefcase.
    • If your partner is going on a business trip secretly hide a love note inside their luggage.
    • Offer to help them with some dreaded chore they must complete and make it into a fun time maybe with some music. (cleaning out the basement, raking the leaves, shoveling after a big snow storm, giving the dog a bath, washing the car, etc.)
    • Do something romantic and spontaneous, like picking a flower and giving it to her right on the spot.
    • Invent a meal and name it after him or her.
    • Buy some body paint and write your love message on your body.
    • Record yourself reading a romantic love poem for your honey. Then give your partner a CD and tell them to play it in the car on their way to work.
    • Make a small postcard sized love collage. Then cover it with clear packing tape. Write a love message on the other side and mail it!
    • Keep a box with mementos of fun things you've done together. Later when the box is filled, arrange them on a board and have it framed.
    • Buy some underwear with special messages on it. Or buy your own and paint a special picture or message with fabric paints.
    • Make a donation to charity in the name of your love for your partner. Give your sweetheart a card that tells how grateful you are to share your life with her.
    • Keep a box with special cards, letters, photographs, and other mementos. On your anniversary or on Valentine's day take a little time to share fond memories together as you review the contents.
    • Create a mindmap of all the things you love about your partner and make it into a card.
    • Take a walk on the beach together. Run up ahead and write a message in the sand, and then call your partner to see what you "found."
    • Say "I love you" often, slowly, and with feeling.
    • Play hooky together. You work hard. Now today take a day to work easy at just sharing some fun time together. Call it an "I love you day."
    • Send an e-card to your sweetie to brighten his/her day. Here are free e-card resources: Apple iCards, BlueMountain, Hallmark.
    • Make little "I love you" posters with either crayons, markers, collage, paint, whatever. Post them in surprising places: the bathroom, the closet, the car, under her pillow, on her pillow.
    • Create a small website or blog dedicated to your partner. Write a short love message each day for a month...or forever.
    • Complete that chore or favor that your partner has wanted you to do for a long time.
    • Be super kind for a whole day. Act like you would with a new love, a child, or a frail person.
    • Show lots of kindness, generosity, and love no matter what for a whole day.
